Mistakes in Cryptocurrency Investing: The Using Voyager Digital Saga and Jason Raznick
Jason Raznick, the creator of BENZINGA, lost money investing in cryptocurrencies in 2022. He was one of Voyager Digital, a bitcoin brokerage’s top seven unsecured creditors. Surprisingly, Raznick’s connections to the company were kept a secret when BENZINGA covered Voyager in June with an “Exclusive” article. In that piece, Voyager’s CEO confidently asserted the security of clients’ assets, but a few weeks later, Voyager declared bankruptcy, dramatically changing the course of events.
Plagiarism Incident
When BENZINGA replicated an entire op-ed essay written by Berkeley law professor Orin Kerr for The Wall Street Journal in 2011, it was considered plagiarism. BENZINGA in this case wrote the essay using the alias “Patrick Harvard.” Notably, when Kerr’s column was independently published by Forbes.com around the same time period, Jason Raznick—the CEO of BENZINGA and one of more than 1,000 unpaid Forbes “contributors” at the time-were listed as the author.
After becoming aware of the plagiarism, BENZINGA took action by firing the offending employee. The original author, Kerr, said that he was more intrigued and amused by the act of copying than he was offended or upset.
Allegations of Stock Manipulation
As a result of illegal stock promotion practices, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed two separate civil complaints against BENZINGA in 2017. BENZINGA claimed to be a victim rather than a perpetrator even though it was not specifically named as a defendant in each case. It claimed that it was unaware of the countless fake articles that were published over four years and purportedly written by “external contributors.”
In connection with these legal proceedings, the SEC released a precautionary “investor warning,” warning the public of the possibility that seemingly objective or offering insight on several stocks, articles on an investment research website might be a part of an unreported, paid stock promotion scheme.
The SEC said that similar websites, such as “Wall Street Cheat Sheet,” SmallCapNetwork.com, InvestorVillage.com, Fool.com, InvestorsHub.com, and Investing.com, among others, also spread the false articles, numbering in the “hundreds,” in addition to the “hundreds” of other websites mentioned. It’s important to note that the SEC filed civil lawsuits against eight people but did not accuse these websites of misconduct.
Unexpectedly, it has been revealed that, as of August 2023, one of the parties who settled with the SEC in 2018 has continued to provide News to BENZINGA through her financial communications company.
