Is Zerodha safe and legit? Zerodha is a legitimate, SEBI-regulated broker and India’s largest discount broker, with over 50 million customers and more than 15% of India’s daily retail trading volume. Founded in 2010 by Nithin Kamath and based in Bangalore, it is regulated domestically by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and registered with the NSE, BSE, MCX, and CDSL. It is known for flat ₹20 brokerage and free equity delivery. Zerodha is regulated for the Indian market only, not by a top-tier international authority such as the FCA or ASIC, and it does not serve traders outside India.

Its platforms are available in English and ten regional languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Oriya.

Is Zerodha regulated?

Zerodha is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), India’s main securities regulator, and operates under RBI rules. It is registered with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), and Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL). It was founded in 2010 by Nithin Kamath, who was named by The Economic Times as one of India’s top businessmen to watch in 2016 for pioneering discount broking in the country.

This is genuine domestic regulation for the Indian market. One point to be clear about: SEBI regulation covers Indian residents trading on Indian exchanges. It is not a top-tier international licence like the FCA, ASIC, or CySEC, and it does not extend to traders outside India. Zerodha also does not offer investor compensation or negative balance protection in the way some internationally regulated brokers do.

Account types

Zerodha keeps account opening low-cost, with no minimum deposit, though the process is partly offline and can take time. It offers four account types:

  • Trading account (opening cost ₹200), required to buy or sell on the stock market.
  • Commodity account (₹100), needed to trade commodities, which also requires a Demat account.
  • Demat account, opened through CDSL membership, with no opening fee but a quarterly maintenance charge of ₹300.
  • NRI account (₹500), available to NRIs offline only, linked to an NRE or NRO bank account with HDFC, Axis, IndusInd, or IDFC First Bank.

Fees and commissions

Zerodha’s core appeal is its pricing. Equity delivery trades are free of brokerage. For everything else, you pay a flat ₹20 per executed order, or 0.01% of the trade value, whichever is lower. For high-volume traders, this flat model saves a significant amount compared with percentage-based brokers. Statutory charges apply as normal, including STT/CTT, transaction charges, GST, SEBI charges, and stamp duty.

Deposits and withdrawals

Deposits and withdrawals are made by bank transfer only. Using UPI or the instant payment gateway, you can move funds from your registered bank account instantly at no cost, though each bank transfer carries a charge of ₹9 plus 18% GST. There are no deposit or withdrawal fees from Zerodha itself, and withdrawals are processed on working days.

Trading platforms

Zerodha runs on Kite, its HTML5 web and mobile platform, available on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Kite offers market watch, technical charts, over a hundred indicators, and advanced order types such as bracket and cover orders across the BSE, NSE, and MCX.

Alongside Kite, Zerodha Coin is its direct mutual fund investment platform, which lets you invest in over 2,000 direct mutual funds commission-free, straight from the asset management companies. This can save around 1.5% a year in commissions compared with regular plans. Coin is accessed through your Kite login.

Assets

Through Zerodha you can trade and invest across:

  • Stocks: over 5,000 for delivery and intraday, listed on the NSE and BSE.
  • Direct mutual funds: over 2,000, commission-free through Coin.
  • Futures and options: on equities, currencies, and commodities via the MCX and NSE.
  • IPOs: applied for online using UPI.
  • Gift stocks: stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, and gold bonds you can gift.
  • Fixed income: government bonds and gold, offering higher yields than typical bank FDs.

Leverage

Zerodha’s intraday equity margin is up to 20% of trade value, giving a maximum of 5x leverage. Delivery trades and F&O carry-forward holdings require full margin.

Equity intraday5xUp to 20% of trade value

F&O (equity, currency, commodities)1x100% of NRML margin (Span + Exposure)

Order types and tools

Zerodha supports a full range of order types: market, limit, stop-loss, day, immediate or cancel (IOC), bracket, cover, and after-market orders. Its tool set includes the Console reporting dashboard, the Kite Connect API (free for startups, ₹2,000 a month for retail), Sentinel price alerts, live charts with over twenty drawing tools, and a Call and Trade service (₹50 per trade). Partner platforms extend this further, including Smallcase for thematic investing, Sensibull for options strategies, Streak for no-code algo trading, and GoldenPi for bonds.

Education and research

Zerodha’s education arm, Varsity, is well regarded. It offers free, structured courses on trading, technical and fundamental analysis, futures, options, and trading psychology, available on the web and as a mobile app with eleven investment courses. Zerodha also provides financial statements, ratios, and charting through Kite (with TradingView integration and around 110 indicators), and has partnered with Thomson Reuters for advanced Stock Reports+ on a paid subscription (from ₹150 a month).

Customer support

Support is available by email and phone, Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is not a 24/7 service. Response is generally prompt, with most issues resolved within one to two business days, though support has been noted to slow at times given the very large customer base.

Pros and cons

Pros: free equity delivery and a flat ₹20 brokerage on other trades, no clearing fees, direct mutual fund investing through Coin, strong free education through Varsity, and access to bonds and government securities through partner platforms.

Cons: call-and-trade costs are higher than some rivals, the spread of separate platforms (Kite, Coin, and partner apps) can feel fragmented, support can be slow at peak times, and software issues occasionally occur under heavy load.

In summary

Zerodha is a well-established, SEBI-regulated discount broker that reshaped the Indian broking market with flat-fee, low-cost trading. It carries no debt, lends little of its own capital, and has one of the lowest complaint-to-client ratios in the market. For Indian residents it is a solid, low-cost option with strong tools and education. It is regulated domestically by SEBI rather than by a top-tier international authority, so its oversight applies to the Indian market rather than to international traders.
